How hard is it to drive a manual?

I have been driving for years but not manual. On auto. Anyone can explain if it is hard to change gears everytime in the road or something... :SHow hard is it to drive a manual?
I didn't find it hard it also depends on your instructor, and how they teach you, i found learning to ride a motorbike way harder. How hard is it to drive a manual?
I never wanted to learn to drive a manual shift, but I moved to Italy where most cars are manual. At age 48 I learned to do it and it wasn't hard at all. Just find someone you trust and who knows how to do it to teach you. The key is to practice as much as possible.

Give it a try. If I could do it, anyone can!
Its easy peasy. The engine will scream at you to change gear.

How do I find a Gear Shift?

I just got a 2000 Ford Focus, and it's about the cutest little thing that I wanted. However, the gear shift is broken. I'm not sure if it is actually called a gear shift, it's what's underneath the gear shift not the thing that I change gears with. It's cracked and isn't in the best condition. I really want to get it fixed but I don't even know what it's technically called! If anyone could help that would be amazing!

1 - What is the technical name for it?

2 - Where can I find a new one?

3 - What should I expect to pay.How do I find a Gear Shift?

Hope this link will help you, But if you have any trouble locating the name, go to the Ford Parts Department and look at their Screen on their computer and get a part number and picture, this will help you locate and have a idea on the price you are going to spend.

Having been in the industry many years, there are names created by the manufacture to misinform the ID of a part. So even when the item is longer available from the dealership at times, they can guide you were to go. Junk Yard, E-Bay, Ford Forum, Another Dealership, or special order from the factory.

Many times it is cheaper if you can buy at the Dealership, for you know the part will be the correct one, has a warranty, will fit, and meets all safety requirements. Good Luck
maybe you are referring to the synchros.

don't have an answer for the second one.

third one...alot

Good luck!
The linkage is internal and if that be the problem, you will need the services of a transmission shop. Possible broken shifter fork. Good Luck. If really bad, consider a used transmission from a salvage company. Start at $250.00 and go up from there.

Why is my Surly Long Haul Trucker touring bicycle's chain jumping?

When I'm riding my Surly Long Haul Trucker bike, the chain keeps jumping around--I can't tell what the problem is, or how to fix it. It does this even when I don't change gears. Why is my Surly Long Haul Trucker touring bicycle's chain jumping?
It can be just a simple barrel adjustment on the rear derailleur. Watch this video and don't touch the screws.

http://bicycletutor.com/adjust-rear-dera

Make sure you are not cross chaining.

http://bicycletutor.com/gear-shifting/Why is my Surly Long Haul Trucker touring bicycle's chain jumping?
If you have changed the rear cassette and did not replace the chain, it will skip. It could also be out of alignment. There is a barrel screw where the cable goes into the rear derailleur. It adjusts the derailleur to the cassette laterally. It may need to be adjusted. If you've had an accident lately, it could be that your derailleur hanger is out of whack. Prolly nothing to do with chain tension. That's all I can think of right now.

My bike is making a popping sound, whats wrong?

It almost sounds like its changing gears, but more painfully. It doesn't happen every revolution of the pedals but still happens regularly every few times. Also, I've noticed the rear derailer has been having trouble finding the highest and lowest gears lately. Any advice on what the problem is and how to fix it would be greatly appreciatedMy bike is making a popping sound, whats wrong?
sounds to me..... that you don't oil your chain.....

most likely you have a couple links that do not move and bend the way they should, and therefore every time they go around.... they jump, and cause a popping noise.

OIL THE CHAIN..... then bend the frozen links back and forth... oil those again..... and see what happens.

if the noise persists.... take it in to a bike dealers... they get you straight again. My bike is making a popping sound, whats wrong?
My dear friend, check the chain, some of the links may be broken. GOD Bless you.
You need to work on the tensions on your cable. adjust your barrel adjusters (blck things on the ends of the cables) to get the bike to shift smoothly. Also, your chain could be too long (they will stretch over time).
If it's popping every few strokes it is highly likely that your chain has a stiff link or is worn out. Clean and lube your chain. Inspect the chain for frozen links. You can usually work it free by applying pressure side to side on the problem links. If it continues a new chain may be in order.
your chain might not be tight. If you tighten it and the problem still continues, just take it to a local bike shop and for a small fee they'll fix it :P
It's likely something to do with your derailer or chain tension. This happened to my bike once and the next thing that happened was my derailer ripped itself right off one day. Unfortunately, it's been quite a while since I've had to fix such a thing and I can't explain it off the top of my head.
first check for something loose or broken.

If you find a defect fix it.

If everything is ok realign the rear axel.

good luck.
get harpy to stp riding bik is no god for bik always weer helmbut nd potecton
Because you mentioned that it's not shifting to the high/low cogs easily, I think you should take it to a shop and have them check the derailleur hanger alignment for a few bucks. Hangers are easy to tweak or bend and they cause all kinds of shifting problems when that happens.

Yes, it could be a stiff or worn chain, but it sounds like the hanger to me. Also, check to be sure that the space between each cog isn't loaded up with grease, dirt, or grass...that can cause the same thing. A clean drivetrain is great medicine for shifting problems. :o)
I tend to agree with Ride Urban with the rear derailleur alignment BUT it could also be a worn chain or a chain with stiff links.

The clues I am zoning in on are that it happens every few revolutions of the pedal (worn/stiff chain) and having trouble getting to the high and low gears (hanger alignment).

To check the chain, just go along and bend each link by hand- you'll immediately fell if any are stiff. Take a 12'; scale and measure from the center of one link to the center of the link closest to the 12'; mark. If it exceeds 12 1/8';, time for a new chain, possibly new chainrings and cassette as well depending on damage.

To check hanger alignment requires a special tool so you'll need a trip to the shop.
How long have you had the bike? It might be time to change the gears and chain because it sounds worn and when the gears are slipping it's an indication that the chain has stretched. Try oiling your chain and gears and if that doesn't work it's time for some new gear and chain replacement.

  • 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?

I own a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg edition. Its one of the nicest cars I've ever driven. However today the engine malfunctioned and cut off after I switched to 2nd gear and it wouldnt start again. Yes I know how to drive stick and every time I change gears I make sure I press the clutch all the way to the bottom. But today right before the engine cut off there was this weird and nasty grinding sound, I imagine it was the timing chain. the car is used and I know Jetta's need their timing chain changed every 65000 miles before a serious malfunction.I've only had it for one day But this is the first time it has happened to me since its the first Jetta I've ever owned and Im worried about the car, . Was the sound I heard before the car cutted off the timing chain snapping or something else ?2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
Well the nasty grinding sound could be a couple of things. It could very well be the timing chain, or the turbo breaking, or the rods cracking, or the pistons blowing a ring, Its really hard to say without opening the engine up. My wife an I have a 2001 Wolfsburg also. It has 108,000 miles on it and it runs great. the only problem that we have had is the piping came loose by the factory intercooler and was loosing boost by blowing air out. 10 minutes it was fixed and running strong again.2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?
most likely the timing belt snapped, this is bad. With the broken belt you will need all the associated items to get to and replace the bent intake valves and possibly the exhaust valves. to check the belt, pop the cover on the passenger side of the engine. if the belt is loose or obviously broken then the above repair is needed which unfortunately is labor intensive. good luck
I have an 01 Jetta too, it's pretty, fun to drive, and I like it but it is a very unreliable little car. I've had mine for 6 months and mine broke down the first day I had it too and so far I've put about $2500 in fixing it and it still needs another $1000 in repairs right now. It's a nice car but it's a love hate relationship. I'd find a good mechanic who is used to working on VW's and become their friend, that's what I did and I have his number saved in my phone.
That doesn't sound like the timing belt to me. When the belt went out on my last Jetta, it made no sound even though I was in 3rd gear. It just quit going into gear so I had to brake and pull over and call a tow truck.

Also, the car should still start even with the belt out.

Back tire on my bicycle won't spin with chain, how to fix it?

The bike is Shimano Orion Vision 14 speed.

When I pedal forwards or backwards the back wheel wont move at all. The wheel does move though if spinned manually. Can also change gears still. Seems like something is missing from connecting the wheel to the chain. Any ideas how to fix it?Back tire on my bicycle won't spin with chain, how to fix it?
    You need a new freewheel.

http://bicycletutor.com/replace-freewheeBack tire on my bicycle won't spin with chain, how to fix it?
depends if you have a freeweel or a cassette. If you have a freewheel you just need to replace it If you have a cassette, it's possible that you might have to replace the whole hub.

How to deal with steep climbs?

    Hi there

After a circuit of nine kilometres I came to climb a quite steep hill.

I approached the hill at a speed of 17km/h, had to change gear to second “Sprocket” the middle one

Soon after this I had to change the rear sprockets to the biggest one to have an easy climb.

By the time I reached the top I was in agony.

I am sure that there must be a skill to tackle these climbs. But the question is, how?

Please need your advice. Many thanks.

TAHow to deal with steep climbs?
G-man has a good answer, As you approach a climb downshift the crank (ring) gears first before the load gets heavy or you stand a good chance of ';chain-suck'; where the chain will not drop to the next lower chain ring. As the climb goes on downshift the rear gears to keep your cadence up, once your cadence drops a lot and you start grinding at a low rpm the climb just gets harder, so the best rule is shift and shift as often as needed to maintain a good cadence. As G-man posted better to finish slow than walk. If this is a trail that you ride often you will eventually find a way to carry as much momentum to the base of the climb and what gears you need to be in, I've seen a lot of riders over the years come to a steep climb and just a few yards before slow down and down shift way to early and into too low a gear, all that does is make the climb last longer.

EDIT: Just fuel for thought, if you want to see how well you are doing get a heart rate monitor, when climbing you can use this to monitor your effort and how hard you can push the pace. How to deal with steep climbs?
You did the right move just need more riding to get used to harder climbs that is my goal this year so regular riding would be a lot easier .
A suggestion... the object is to climb the grade isn't it? If a rider goes too hard at the bottom of a long climb he/she may end up giving out before the top. An old timer cyclist gave me this advice some time ago... do your downshifting at the bottom of the climb. Get into a nice easy pace that you'll be able to maintain for the entire climb and stay at that pace. You won't get to the top first but you will get to the top without becoming completely spent or... worse yet, having to get off and walk the last few yards.

If you follow this advice, you may not be the first one to get to the top but there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing that will get there without all that agony you mentioned. I've successfully used his advice over the past 10 years of cycling and am proud to say that I've never not made it on a climb. While not usually the first one to the top, I've never had to walk it up or just given up because of overdoing it at the bottom. The secret is pacing yourself.

As far as the training angle goes, save those all out efforts for use on the smaller climbs that you know you can handle and your performance will continue to improve over time but gear it down a bit on those really steep grades.
G-Man and that old timer has it exactly right, follow there advice and you should have any problems. Good answer G-man.
Carry as much speed into the hill as you can. When you can't keep up the cadence any more, then shift down A LOT into a gear where you can keep the cadence that you entered with. Stay seated. Spin your way up the hill. You will get to the top faster in the long run, and still have energy left. Think of it this way: Would you rather lift a 2 pound weight 200 times or a 200 pound weight twice?

Don't try to emulate the pros you see on TV dancing on the pedals up incredible climbs. The average person can't do even half of what those guys do. That's why they are professionals. Sometimes I think they are a different species, nothing but legs, lungs, and heart.

    HTH
i'm assuming since you are measuring distances, you are talking about road. i'm a mountain biker, but same principles apply. take g-man's advice, it's about the cadence. in mountain biking especially, always shift before the climb, this will help you keep a steady pace while you spin on the saddle and it will also protect your chain from jerky movements. if it's a short climb, take it with speed and muscle your way through. as far as the ';agony,'; it's always going to hurt, it's about being prepared for the pain that makes the difference....practice, practice, practice.
    a. shift before the hill - it;s hard on your bike to shift under heavy strain - plus it may not shift at all if you pedal too hard - or the chain may come off and you go down

    b. if there is no traffic and you can;t shift - zigzag - gives you less of a grade

    c. you don;t say if ';second “Sprocket” the middle one'; is the smallest front or not - use the smallest front and biggest rear

    d. other than that, the only skill is just do it

    wle
There is no universal answer. Every hill is a bit different. You don't mention the length of the hill and that (plus the steepness) determine how you should handle it. Your bike must also be considered. And finally, it matters whether you want to get up as quickly as possible or simply make it to the top. I'll assume the aim is getting up, not racing.

That said, if a hill is fairly short and steep you can potentially ';power'; up it if you have enough momentum when starting the climb. Basically, you would accelerate as you approach the hill, but shift down as you go up, so as to maintain a reasonable cadence.

But it sounds like you are a) riding a three-speed bike , and b) it is a longish hill.

The type of bike doesn't change the basic strategy (but it does limit your options somewhat). If you know you are going to have to use your lowest gear well before the top, there is no point in attacking the hill, but neither do you want to waste momentum either. So pedal ';normally'; as you reach the hill, and as momentum bleeds off shift to your next lower gear and the next as necessary, but being sure to switch before the going gets really tough. The idea is that you don't want to have to shift too late ... i.e. ';under load'; ... since this can lead to problems (even falling off the bike), but you don't want to shift too soon since this wastes momentum. If in doubt shift early. The key is to try to maintain pedal cadence ... that's your guide and you use gears to achieve it.

If you have a 3-speed bike you will quickly be in your lowest gear. So now you must try to keep up the cadence and pedal sitting down (standing takes more energy). To minimize the chance of knee damage you want to keep the cadence above 50 rpm. If you can't keep pedal speed up sitting you have two choices, stand and ';grind it out'; or get off an walk. If you stand you can use your whole body weight to push down on the pedals, but cadence will drop off and speed will drop. You must be prepared to dismount should your speed get too low.

If you have a multi speed bike the technique is a bit different. Basically, you downshift fairly early to a gear that you think will allow you to maintain a reasonable cadence (60-70 rpm minimum). This may be a much lower gear than is available to you on a 3-speed. If the objective is just to get up the hill, many people use their lowest gear and they just take it easy ';spinning'; up the hill. On the other hand if the aim is to get up and over as quickly as possible, riders will only shift into lower gears as necessary in the early part of the hill and won't go into a lower gear than necessary at any point. Again, the aim is to maintain cadence (but not risk overstressing the geartrain by waiting too long to shift).

As you do more riding hills will get a bit easier ... and you can get stronger by working hard on smaller hills and gradual slopes ... but long steep hills are an issue for all but the ';born'; hill-climbers (you know ... the 140 lb, 5' 8'; fly on the multi-speed road bike. For mere mortals like me at 6'2'; and 200 lbs (and I suspect you), particularly if on a heavier/under-geared bike hills will always be hard work. That said, with proper technique and some determination you can make it up most hills without suffering too badly.

    Hope that helps.
You want to climb those hills with a high cadence and a lite pedal pressure. If I know that I am going to have to down shift more I go to the smallest chain ring early. If I am on the center ring on the front and #2 on the rear I will do a double shift and go to #1 on the front and #3 on the rear. That drops you one gear and gives you two more. It's easier to down shift on the rear and you won't lose as much momentum. You want a gear that is easy to pedal and you can accelerate in if you need to. Pedaling too slow and hashing on the pedals will use your fast twitch muscles that use glycogen as a fuel and produce lactic acid which is the burning sensation.

Actually you want to do as much of the ride at a high cadence using your slow twitch muscles as you can. Save your fast twitch muscles for the top of the hill if needed. The more you ride the stronger you will get and the smaller that hill will get.

    http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/ar…
Well, what I like to do is to get speed before the hill so my momentum can carry me partway up easily. Make sure you breathe, sounds stupid but it helps. Before it gets too hard pedaling, shift to a higher gear. I don't know if your bike is a double or triple chainring, but many people like to use the granny gear on super steep hills- that's the smallest gear on the triple ring. I totally know how you feel though. When I'm going up hills, I always feel like I'm going to cramp, so make sure you stretch, eat bananas, and granola bars, and drink plenty of water.

Mitsubishi lancer evo 9 difficult to drive?

I heard that it gets annoying driving an evo 9 in stop go traffic. Is it that bad? and how does it feel changing gears in the evo 9?Mitsubishi lancer evo 9 difficult to drive?
it basically depends on which sub-model you have. the FQ320 is considered the best EVO IX model and strangely so the easiest to drive as well. infact the Evolution series is renowned for the ability to make a novice feel in control and push the edge without pushing into walls.

on the other hand the EVO IX FQ400 is rated bad, its really fast but very thirsty the gearbox is stiff with a very wide turning circle and it gets worst, this particular model has phenomenal turbo lag. if you are not in the right gear at the right time even a ford fiest will smoke you.

so if you mean EVO IX FQ400 then the answer is yes, it is quiet a bad drive and expensive as well.Mitsubishi lancer evo 9 difficult to drive?
I believe that he is talking state side there. the FQ's are only availible in the UK.....First off the Evo is made to be a track car....it is slightly unconfortable but that doesn't matter cause it's an Evo right?!?! Lol anywho if you want a car similar to the Evo but one that is more of a road car I'd have to suggest the Subaru WRX STi.....but in my oppinion i'd take the slightly degraded town travel for the fact that i could say that i drove an Evo!

I heard you can import a type r to the US but you'd have to pay for registration and some other stuff. Is that true?

And I don't know how to drive standard yet so, When do you change gears? Is it when it gets to 4000 - 5000 Rpm or 7000 - 8000 RpmCan you convert a 2008 Si to a type R?
there is no 2008 type r and well yes u can import a type r but id cost a lot because the shipping is crazy and actually u cant register the car since it doesn't actually pass us crash test ratings and as for the shifting if you were racing yeah bout 8000 for a b18 type r engine but under normal driving more like 3500 id actually be cheaper to buy a civic hatch back or a integra and for you to swap out jdm parts

not enough to make a difference you might knock off a second or two but the future maintenance isn't worth it look into tacking away some weight or modifying you fuel system good luck
Your car is nice as hell. Don't let these little wussy pu*sy boys tell you it ain't. They need to grow up and buy a ford. You would probably get a second out of that which would help. Your car is so fast because it's a ford. You have a bada*s car. Now get to it and go bust some chevy's!!!
If ur running a 13.7 in a 99 stang gt, it's definitely not stock. my 95 with some mods destroys ';stock'; 99 GTs. They run high 14s to low 15s. But, if ur cars runs a 13.7, the new gear will drop about a tenth.
I'd say 1 to 3 tenths. It trully varies.
I dropped almost .5 off my 1/4 with my gears and tlok install i went from stock 3.27 to 3.73 in my auto... The pick up on the car is great. Only thing i had to get use to is the higher rpms while cruising on the highway.

If it is automatic, no. If it is a manual shift, it can be rebuilt with new gears but they would have to be available.

You may only have to change the final drive ratio.

How do you change speeds on a Powerwheels jeep?

I am not sure about the older ones. Newer ones (with a shifter lever) are set to be in low speed from the factory. To be able to put it in high gear, you need to remove the high speed lockout screw, that prevents the gear shift from moving unintentionally.

Look on page 21 of this manual from the power wheels site. It will at least tell you if yours is the same as the current models.

Need to change the gears in a ford 9in rear end, need info on how to do it?

If you have never done any work with gearing and rear ends I would not suggest attempting this. There is things that have to be just right, such as the back lash. These adjustments have to be made in thousandths of an inch and if they're off just a little you'll just be changing the gears again. It is pretty basic once you know how to do it though. Just take the cover off of the case. Jack the whole rear end of the car up. Drop the drive shaft from the rear end. If you take a look it's pretty obvious how it comes out. Get some one to help you that knows something though for the installation.Need to change the gears in a ford 9in rear end, need info on how to do it?

  • 78 F-150 Stalling when changing gears help?

Okay I have 1978 Ford F-150 Custom with what I believe is a 390 with an auto transmission, and when I shift from park to drive after it is already warmed up it stalls. The only way to get it to drive is to give it gas while changing the gear, which I thought would be hard on the transmission so I only did it a few times. Could anybody give me suggestions I don't know too much else about the truck so I don't know how much else I can tell you.78 F-150 Stalling when changing gears help?
Yeah most likely it is a 351m or 400, they stopped putting 390 in them in 76, but you could have a 390 or 360 if someone put it in it the only way to tell is to get the numbers off the block and check it. Also if you get an Lmc truck magazine you can look up your Vin in the front of the book and it will tell you what your motor is and everything about your truck. Also if its stalling its probably one of these 8 things,

    1. Carburetor idle speed incorrectly set

    2. Carb fuel filter clogged and/or water in the fuel system

    3. Choke improperly adjusted or sticking

    4. Distributor components damp, damage to distributor cap, rotor etc.

5.Emission system components faulty( If you have any of these)

6.Faulty or incorrect spark plug gap or damaged plug wires

7.Vacuum leak at carb, intake manifold or vacumm hoses.

    8. Valve Lash Incorrectly set78 F-150 Stalling when changing gears help?
Check the timing it could be out of time and/or the car could be idled too low,you may also want to check for a vacuum leak this is also a common reason for engines to stall in such a manner, for more info you could go to a local parts store and buy a Chilton or Haynes manuel that covers you truck,if you plan on keeping the truck it would come in handy.
first its probably a 351m or 400 second try checking your egr valve how long since it was tuned up also check cap rotor listen for vacuum leaks adjust your choke check your choke pull off

    hope this helps
Once it is in gear, if you hit the brakes does the engine bog down or stall? If so, I would bet the torque converter is shot.

When should I shift gears up in a diesel car?

I have an Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI and I want to know at how many rpm I should change the gears up so that the engine doesn't suffer and the consumption still stays low. I have heard that I should shift up in such a way, so that the tachometer remains in the maximum torque interval, which for my car is 1750 - 2500 rpm (from the book). In other words, in the higher gear, the rpm should not drop below 1750 when i shift. Is this true? Thanks in advance and sorry for any typos. When should I shift gears up in a diesel car?
I know a person should shift gears to suit speed, terrain, and traffic conditions. I try to shift gears fairly low on the tachometer but sometimes a person needs to rev the engine a little farther to make the next gear transition smoother. I try not to lug any engine but sometimes it happens. Most newer cars have a shift indicator but you can't always go by that. If your car has a turbocharger like so many other diesels do then you should pay attention to the amount of boost it is providing. Most turbos have a little bit of lag so make sure that you are not overrevving because it might make it harder to shift into the next gear. A person just has to get to know their vehicle to figure all of the necessary details out. Good Luck. When should I shift gears up in a diesel car?
    Yep, that's pretty much it.

But depending on your gearing, if you shift at the top of the power band, up to the next gear, you might end up being below the power band after the shift. In this case you have to compensate. Go a little above the power band before shifting.

Anyway you're not going to hurt your car or see a significant difference in MPG so don't worry about it too much.

If you want to save gas just drive slow. It's easier on the engine too.
After u've driven ur car 4 a while u'll know just simply by sound, and another tip is speed will tell u too.
As a semi-retired semi truck driver Progressive shifting will most always benefit a vehicle while accelerating to road speed....However this requires patience and and restraint Because the rat race around you will always be pushing at your rear....trying to hurry you along... find the pace that fits your needs.

When to shift gear for manual?

That depends on the car. You want to shift before the RPMs get too high, and you also don't want to shift when the RPMs are too low. You don't want to lug the engine down by shifting too soon. As for the speeds to shift, ask the dealer what speeds they recommend, since it would vary by car.
you can guage it by the whine of your engine. The higher it seems to go the more likely you need to shift.
it depends on the engine .... just shift at the lowest speed u can without lugging it ..
Every car has different speeds it needs to shift at, depending on the type of car and how many cyclinders your engine has. Your best bet is to listen. When your car sounds like it is reving to high switch gears up, if it jerks hard on the shift you should have shifted sooner. If it seems like it is dragging after the shift you should have waited and shifted later. Watch your speedometer while you practice this then you will know the speeds when you should shift and get the feel for it. It will be natural after awhile. But also remember if you are going up a hill you will be shifting at a higher speed than normal.
    Hi,

I had a car with no Rpm guage and you can use the sound of the engine with the speedometer. For the car I had it was basically a small FOUR cylinder and it worked out to be:

0-15 mph lst gear (some higher 20/25!)

    16-25 mph 2nd gear

    26-35 third gear

    36-49 fourth gear

    over 50 cruising....fifth gear....

this is adjustable when you want a quicker take off, or if you're going up a steep hill.

DON't shift at the earliest (bad advice from someone), you're forcing the engine to work too hard to bring up the rpms to the optimal place (and therefore losing the mpg advantage of sticks), plus you might need to downshift again in traffic, instead of just coasting (and saving your clutch AND brakes). When the engine is no longer giving you the pickup that you had early in the torque curve, then it's time to shift. This is well before the engine screaming because you are pushing it too hard. I've found that you can push it pretty hard and the engine will tell you with noise and a lack of acceleration (the gear ratio has maxed it's speed) and most people are not going to fry it by pushing harder. However, I've been in the car with people who shifted from 1st to 2nd at 35mph in a 4 cylinder (not racer!), I could hear the whine but I didn't want to backseat drive, haha.

You cars maker might have more information. Mechanics are also a good source, as they see burnt clutches all the time.
Well... before the engine flys apart. its better to run lowere rpms than higher.

I just low sided my bike at about 40-45mph, what kinda damage do you check for on the bike?

I ride a 1997 ninja zx-6 and this is not my first low side, but i dont realli know much about checking for mechanical and technical things. I checked over major areas like the clutch cover, etc. and there are no leaks. The bike does start and changes gears, but there seems to be something off and can't quite figure it out. Also there seems to be something off with the alighnment of the bike and suspension. How do you check for these errors and other errors. Is there a checklist or something. I would rather not have to take it into the shop unless necessary because it gets rather expensive. Please can anyone help me out?I just low sided my bike at about 40-45mph, what kinda damage do you check for on the bike?
Sorry pal but you need to get it checked out by a pro. You were lucky this time bc you are still alive. If there something wrong with the bike it ups the chances of you getting into trouble again. This time you might not be so lucky!

How to add oil to a 4 speed granny gear?

ok i got my 4 speed granny gear and there is not a dipstick for the transmission so how would i check to see if i have tranny oil in it or not also how do you add the tranny oil because its a little hard to change gears it aint smooth you have to put some force to it thanksHow to add oil to a 4 speed granny gear?
somewhere on the side of the tranny you will find a threaded plug- fill it to the bottom of the threads- wouldnt hurt to drain it %26amp; fill it. put a length of hose on the nipple of the gear oil bottle to make filling easierHow to add oil to a 4 speed granny gear?
If its rear wheel drive sometimes its just easiest to remove the shifter and add oil thru the opening.
you need to bring the car to the dealership b/c yo uhave to added the fluid from the bottom of the the car there is an access screw just like your oil pan screw and you have to have the right equipment inorder to add the fluid inot the pan, but it sounds like to me your trans is fixing to go out.
should b a plug on side of tranny...open it and fill till its leakin out...u may need 2 use a suction/pump.to get it in there...
There are two plugs on the tranny One on the side and one on the bottom Remove the one on the side if oil seeps out it doesn't need oil...If it doesn't seep then stick your little finger in the hole if you can touch the oil again you don't need to add oil.

The stiff shifting could be a sign of the clutch not releasing completely.. or the synchronizes starting to wear down,, if this is the case the tranny will have to be rebuilt

    Good Luck
There will be a 3/8 or 1/2 in plug on the side of the tranny. Remove the plug and the fluid should be right at the bottom of the hole. If it is low fill it with the right oil. Make sure you put in what the dealer calls for. and never mix regular with synthetic oil. Good Luck.

Why does my bike skip gears?please help!10 pts?

i have a Schwinn mountain bike i dont know the model .

my problem is the when i pedal hard the chain makes a a loud sound like its adjusting but it never adjust. this happens only when i pedal hard or stand up and pedal.

i just got it fixed they changed the derailleurs the chain they tuned it up and everything down there but when i took it for a quick test run around the bike shop it did the same thing.

im taking it on a bike trail tomorrow and really test it but in the mean while.

what can be the cause of this if it keeps happening.?

do i changed gears wrong? on the left side its a 3 on the right a 6

do i pedal to hard is the bike to weak for me.? fyi its my size.60cm

when i first got it it didnt make a sound it was perfect it never skipped no matter how hard i pedaled

any advice would be i will be asking all these questions to the bike shop dude tommotow but just so i can have more knowlgedWhy does my bike skip gears?please help!10 pts?
    could be

    cheap bike

    worn cassette

    incorrect adjustment [most likely]

gear 3 and 6 should be fine, shouldn;t cause skipping

if it did it in the bike shop - why didn;t you just ask then, when you were actually there?

wle.Why does my bike skip gears?please help!10 pts?
You say your derailleurs and chain were replaced, but you don't mention the cassette. If it was not changed, it is the most likely culprit. Worn cassettes are the most common cause of this sort of problem when a chain has been replaced, the new chain will not fit into the worn cogs and will skip a few teeth as soon as you put pressure on your pedals.
check frt derailleur for height above chainring, and side adj, I 'll bet your chain is rubbing the sides of the cage when you pedal hard, there are 2 screws on the derailleur for adj
Is the chain damaged ot the gear..

It could also be the low and high stop position isn't right.

Or they put on the wrong derailleurs.
poorly tuned derailleur would be my first suggestion to check
You have a low quality 18 speed bike don't expect too much.

First, realise that either YOU are the judge or a professional is - but they can make mistakes, and its your body on the line. Either way is a risk - the size may vary!

If you want to do it yourself then I recommend:

    1. Take bodywork off and look over it carefully for frame damage.

    2. Line up the wheels with your eyes - look for it all being straight. I would check it with a string-line, and you should be able to find a site on-line telling youhow to do this.

    3. Get each wheel in the air - check it spins freely, and that the brake grips firmly %26amp; smoothly.

4.Try to move the wheel by pulling the top to one side and pulling the bottom in the opposite direction - check BOTH ways - it should be solid.

    5. Check oil, cables, fuekllines etc before running motor.

    6. Check / Clean air filter.

    7. Ride it - slowly - feel for anything wrong - check brakes, steering, suspension at very low, then low speed as you ride.

If you suspect that anything's wrong you don't understand, I advise you to seek professional help- especially if its to do with brakes, steering or suspension!I just low sided my bike at about 40-45mph, what kinda damage do you check for on the bike?
check your clutch cable adjustment, and take your hands off the bars at speed and see if it tracks straight or wants to go one way or the other. also, lock your front brakes at a stop and push back and forth real quick and see if you hear clicking.
You may want to check yourself for repetition, like posting a question multiple times.

Simple answer....if you want to be safe take it to a dealer that has either no fee estimate or a low cost estimate for repairs. They will find everything because they want your money and your business. After you get that you will know mechanically what is wrong with your bike and if it nothing serious you can make the repairs.
If you bent the forks or the swing-arm,

    and not the frame, (unlikely),

    maybe you can replace them.

    Look for a bent wheel.

If you bent the frame, she's totaled.

I have a question on how to fix a bike?

I have a 18-speed Next Bike it is in pretty good condition other than some rust, but when you are riding in any gear after about three full pedals it clicks. What I mean by clicking is that is clicks like you are changing gears even though you arent. I was thinking something was wrong with the cable. If you know anything about bikes I would appreciate you answer my question. I'm needing to know what the problem is and how to fix the problem if it is fixable.I have a question on how to fix a bike?
The clicking is because the derailer is not aligned perfectly with the sprocket the chain is on. It is trying to change gears.

You can fiddle with the adjuster screw until it goes away or take it to a bike shop and pay then to adjust it. Sometimes it is worth it because those things can be so aggravating.

You also might want to add new cables since if there is any rust or anything in them, they might not be adjusting 100%I have a question on how to fix a bike?
Click this: It gives you complete instructions on adjusting your derailer.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adj
There are a few things that can cause this, but they are all pretty easy to fix. First the cable could be stretched, buy new derailluer cables.. you won't need expensive ones, there is hardly a difference unless you are racing. Next tune the derailluers. Goto http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/fix/index.htm if you don't know how to adjust them. If you are riding an older bike replace the chain too, it will make a big difference in performance. I would suggest doing all these things on an older bike or a bike that hasn't been ridden in a while. A lot of bike shops can do it for you, but they can get pricey, you should be able to do all that yourself for $20-$30.

How much does it cost to replace a MAF sensor on HUNDAI ?

Hi, The check engine light is one and the car wont change gears easily. We gave teh dealership BOTH codes and they said BOTH MAF sensors need to be replaced. Is this true?

How can 2 go bad at once? We dont want them to overcharge us..What else can do? ThanksHow much does it cost to replace a MAF sensor on HUNDAI ?
One place you can use to do price checking on car repairs is in Driverside.com - you can drill down to specific cars like a Hyundai. I used them for my last repair. They are still in beta but they have a ton of data on what car parts and repairs should cost. How much does it cost to replace a MAF sensor on HUNDAI ?
the car has only one mass air flow sensor, It measures the air comming into the engine before the throttle body. they are very easy to install usually has two bolts/screws. You might have 2 separate codes refering the same thing
I think most MAF sensors are about $100.00.

I have a 1962 pickup truck and it is geared low so it only goes 55 mph. How can I get it geared up.?

Too slow for highway. how much to change gear problem?I have a 1962 pickup truck and it is geared low so it only goes 55 mph. How can I get it geared up.?
you,ll have to change the rear differential in it to get more speed out of it,other wise it will run like this, the lower the number like a 3:23 gear ratio will help it out on speed on the highway ,first off though you,ll need to know what it has in it good luck hope this helps.I have a 1962 pickup truck and it is geared low so it only goes 55 mph. Change the rear end and speed worm and gears in transmission to match. Use one out of a 60's car that had the same rear end.

Change transmissions to a passenger car model.
The rear differential will have to be changed with a chunk that has taller gears.
If it is truly geared low you will have to change the transmission or the differential. It may have a governor on it, allowing it go up to a certain speed.
While changing out the differential by replacing the ring gear and pinion with ones of a ';higher'; ratio would do what you ask, you would loose the low end pulling power of the truck.

A different solution might be to install an overdrive transmission - which bolts up behind the current one. It would also mean a shorter drive shaft.

Gear Vendor's makes such a unit - they probably will have something which fits.

Yet a different solution is to swap in a modern transmission behind your old engine - one that has more gears - including single or double overdrive. This is easier than it sounds, especially if you have one of the standard engines which has a common bell housing pattern for years and years. While you are at it, if you have a manual, you could swap out for an automatic. Going the other way is harder - as you don't have the interior bits to operate a clutch.

If you don't mind the loss of low end power, the ring/pinion change is the least expensive. Just make sure you find someone who actually knows how to check the mesh of the gears. If they mesh correctly, the differential will last 200,000 miles. If they are set up wrong - it could be toast in 500.
You'll want to go to a numerically lower gear set in the rear end. Say you have 3.11 gears in the rear differential. Going to say a 2.73 ratio would just about take care of it.

Of course you'll need to alter your speedo to make it accurate. I assume this is a 2wd truck? If it's 4wd then you'd need to change out gears in the front end and rear end. Remember that the fronts may be reverse toothed gears. You didn't mention anything about the tire size or the transmission size. Depending on the engine, original or updated, and tranny type you could do this. Let's say it's an automatic 3 speed. An updated unit like a turbo 350 or turbo 400. Well, with some modifications, you could stick a 700R4 transmission which would give you an overdrive gear for the highway while maintaining the other gear ratios you have.

What about the tires, are they stock or are they something smaller (circumferance) Taller tires are going to have the same effect as changing the gears. Example, I have an 80 Ford Bronco with 38.5'; tires on it. The gears were 3.50 in a Ford 9'; rear end. Those were awful. I changed the gear sets front and rear to the 4.11's and they were great. Speed was even accurate. The thing is though that when I did that, I had 37'; tires. When I put the 38.5'; tires on it, it changed the whole picture. Power loss due to gear ratio alteration via tires. That's a lot of info but you'll sort it out. write me if you have more questions.
Installing larger tires will give you more speed @ the same RPM's as when you were doing 55 MPH. How much more speed will be determined by the circumference of the rear tires. There are some web sites that will show the increase if I can find them for you I'll post them.

    Good luck

http://www.intercotire.com/site63.php This site will give you an idea of the change tires can make.

How do i use the honda sport clutch?

When i am pedaling normally my bike chain makes a skipping sound, i have tried fixing before by changing gears but i dont really know what else to do?Everytime i pedal my chain sounds like its skipping. How can i fix it?
Best off to take it to the nearest bike shop and speak with a mechanic who will assess the symptoms and tell you what's up. Otherwise it's just pure speculation at this point. In other words there would have to be a lengthy discourse between you and me through trial and error just to get an idea of what your bike looks like. It could be anything from a bent derailleur hanger/or cage to a worn out drive train. I'd rather not guess and freak you out with worst case scenarios, but rather have you speak to someone who can actually see the bike. Good luck!Everytime i pedal my chain sounds like its skipping. How can i fix it?
Move your back tire back it sounds like your chain is too loose
Check the chainring deraileur, go into the gear it starts skipping, and there are litte screws taht adjust how fare that thing moves
It's unclear what you mean by ';changing gears.'; This makes a difference in how I should answer.

Assuming you meant shifting into a different gear while riding in hopes of avoiding the skipping sounds, that is not going to be a long-term solution. In fact, you're only making things worse the longer you ride like that. (See below.)

Assuming you meant that you have replaced the cassette (the whole set of rear cogs, or gears), I have to say that you have gone half way to fixing the problem. You probably have a worn out chain (a likely scenario if you needed to replace your cassette). Over time with many trips through the cassette, the metal in the chain links gets worn down from friction. As that metal is worn down, the distance between your chain links gets bigger and causes the chain to fall on the teeth of your cassette unevenly. This is the skipping sound you describe. The longer this skipping goes on, the more damaged your cassette will become as well, because the loose chain is now torquing awkwardly on the teeth. The teeth then get bent and worn prematurely. If you haven't replaced the cassette, it is quite possible that you will need to. Look for the damaged teeth as I have discussed. If you don't feel qualified to do so, ask the bike shop mechanic. They're usually pretty good about not charging for that sort of thing if its a real quick look-see.

To diagnose this as the problem, go to your local shop and buy a chain checker tool for about $7. (Bring your bike with you so you can do the chain check before leaving the shop, because I'll bet you're going to be buying a chain, too.) Park tool makes a good one I've linked here: http://www.parktool.com/products/detail. Follow the easy instructions on the box. As I said, then get out your wallet again and go buy a new chain appropriate for your bike (8 speed, 9 speed, whatever).

You can't move your back wheel, so don't try that. Unless they make bikes with adjustable dropouts for rear wheels (they don't), your wheel goes in one place only - where the manufacturer put it.

So my clutch went out on my car. Anyone know how much this is gonna cost?

I stepped on my clutch, changed gears, and when I lifted my foot, the pedal wouldn't come back up.

Pulled over and it seems that the fluid is all leaked out. I filled it up, but nothing started working. It keeps leaking out. I believe on of the cylinders is blown. Anyone know how much that'll cost to fix?So my clutch went out on my car. Anyone know how much this is gonna cost?
you dont need a clutch. Sounds like the Slave Cylinder or Master Cylinder. Probably the Slave. But usually when one of these goes bad, the other works harder to compensate so it will eventually go bad too. Replace them both if you can afford it.

you need to replace those cylinders, then bleed the system before it will operate again. So my clutch went out on my car. Anyone know how much this is gonna cost?
you,ll need to replace both the clutch and the slave cylinder on it,so its going to cost you about 200 bucks to get this one back on the road again,i did one last week though and their not hard to do,good luck.

Why does my car smells burnt?

I've noticed it twice now.. it's not a regular burnt smell, I'm not sure how to describe it. My dad recently changed my brakes so I'm wondering if that could be it, although when I asked him he said it might be my clutch. I haven't noticed any issues with it but I do like to drive pretty fast so I change gears kind of late to make it speed up quicker, if that makes sense. Why does my car smells burnt?
yes it could be the brakes.when they are new they will smell until they get broke in to the rotors. yes a clutch can smell too if it,s slipping and also a cat converter can stink too if it starts to clog up.Why does my car smells burnt?
if it's sort of a scorched metal smell it probably is your clutch i think your dad is right or maybe its just burning oil
Disconnect your battery and have a mechanic come look at it! I have had a car fire b4
try driving it like a person thats worried about there clutch see if the smell goes away

What would you consider as cheating, or unacceptable in a relationship?

Last night I went out with a guy, He's mainly my brothers friend, but I suppose he is my friend too.

We were driving around in his car and he taught me how to change gear by putting my hand on it and his hand on top of mine. We talk sexually towards each other a lot. Just friendly banter really. I was told by someone that he cheated as he touched me sensually? And that maybe he is emotionally cheating?

What do you class as the first instance of cheating on someone?

Thanks, xWhat would you consider as cheating, or unacceptable in a relationship?
Touching can be considered cheating if it were your leg, breast, or butt. But this is your hand and he was teaching you how to change gears. Not cheating.

Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?

When I push the clutch peddle down to change gear, the car squeals fairly loudly. It does this when it's moving and when stationary.

There's a hint of a squeal in neutral too (but not as loud)

    It's an 1998 Peugeot 306 that's done around 89000

What could it be and how long have I got before it explodes?! I can't get to the garage for 2 weeks because work is being **** about time off.

Thanks in advance! Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
Sounds like the clutch thrust bearing (what the Americans call a throw-out bearing). If it is, it will entail the gearbox being taken down and you may as well ask them to look at the rest of your clutch while they're at it, and replace anything else that's getting remotely worn. Clutch parts are relatively cheap, the biggest cost is the labour for pulling it apart and reassembling it, so you might as well get your money's worth.

It can go on for quite while like that, on occasions though that ';while'; can be short. Keep everything crossed. I did, years ago when money was short, struggle on with a near-seized thrust bearing for some months once . . .Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?
Could be the thrust bearing has worn, might as well have the clutch done at the same time if you can it will be cheaper in the end.
yes,,its the throw out [clutch release] bearing...whatever we all call it its a 30 dollar bearing that costs hundreds to replace because the tranny has to come out,,,soooo while ur at it,,,replace whole clutch...thats the facts jack!
tht and check your belt for cracks and slippage SLIPPING
as for WENDEL HOMES you can not just change the thrust bearing as no1 sells thrust bearings and you will have to get a new clutch full stop!

even if you could buy them no mechanic is going to take the gear box off the car then chuck a thrust bearing in then re assemble to find the pressure plates have worn days later!

THE PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR IS THE CREASE LUBRICATION IN THE THRUST BEARING HAS DRIED UP OR THE PRSSURE PLATES ARE WORN SO WHEN THE BEARING SITS ON THE CLUTCH PLATE OR MAKES CONTACT IT'S METAL AGAINST METAL GRINDING MAKING THE NOISE YOU DESCRIBED AND YOU WILL NEED A CLUTCH WICH FOR A 1.4 PUG IS USUALLY FROM æ‹¢30 TO æ‹¢90ISH LABOUR MAYBE ABOUT æ‹¢100... SAY æ‹¢150 ALL IN...

AND AS PROOF HERE IS A CLUTCH TO FIT THE BILL%26gt; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-306-1.4-CL
It is the trow out bearing creating that noise. So either listen to it till it goes out or take it into the shop and get it replaced. I would suggest you get the clutch done while the mechanic is in there.
sounds like the throwout bearing or the pivot arm the pedal rides on.

If your brother's friend is in a relationship with someone else, and was talking sexually with you, then his behavior was inappropriate.

Would you want your boyfriend or husband to talk sexually to another woman. Think about it?

Was it cheating? Depends on the conversation really....if you two were talking about wanting to screw each other and how it would occur, I'd call that a form of cheating. If it was just sexual innuendo or general remarks, then unacceptable but not cheating.

A behavior doesn't have to be cheating to cause problems in a relationship or to cause it to end. If the words or behavior aren't something you would do in front of your partner or if they were things you wouldn't want your partner to do with someone else, then they aren't okay for you to do...that includes people in relationships and people who are associating with people in relationships (such as you were). What would you consider as cheating, or unacceptable in a relationship?
i don't think thats considered cheating... he was just helping you out(:
No i don't think so, i suppose over touching could count, inappropriate touching. But his hand on yours.. nah.
For me, ya if you are touching someone inappropriately it is cheating. Like if you put your hand on their leg or around their shoulder. That being said, he only put your hand on his the gear shifter??? That is NOT cheating.... although if I were this guys girlfriend I wouldnt want him hanging around someone who he talks ';sexually'; with... even if it is friendly, it can become more.

  • How to unstick a clutch?

The clutch on my 92 Honda Accord is stuck. It will not release, you can change gears, if it is not running. I just came out one morning and the pedal was on the floor. How do I get it to release? How to unstick a clutch?
if the pedal is on the floor then you have no hydraulic pressure in the clutch system.

The clutch on your car is hydraulic and uses a master cylinder similar to the brake master cylinder to transfer the mechanical energy of your stepping on the clutch pedal to the hydraulic fluid in the clutch line and down to the slave cylinder on the transmission housing. the slave cylinder moves in response to the hydraulic force and pushes the clutch fork to release the clutch.

the first thing to do is to check the level of the hydraulic fluid. the clutch uses the DOT3 brake fluid as the hydraulic fluid. You check the fluid at the clutch master cylinder which is below the brake master cylinder. Look on the engine wall where the clutch pedal would be and you'll see it. if the fluid is low as I suspect, top it up. then pump the clutch pedal (use your hand to lift it initiallty if necessary) to bleed the air out. the pedal should start to come up and build force. if it doesn't then you need to bleed the air out at the slave cylinder, but in most cases it will pump up. when you get a firm pedal then you'll need to find out where the fluid went. it doesn't just disappear, it leaks. so the likely suspects for a leak would be the clutch master or slave cylinders.

if the clutch master cylinder is full of fluid then you have a condition where the fluid is bypassing the piston inside the clutch master cylinder. in that case, you have no option but to replace the cylinder. Most technicians chose to replace the master and slave cylinders at the same time.

    hope that helps

Help! Car makes rattling noise when I change gear or accelerate and burns after long journeys!?

Ok, so on december 8th my little car had its m.o.t, I drive a ford fiesta encore 1998 1.3engine, the work needed cost me around æ‹¢180 and so I got it done because I need my little baby. Lol. Now a few days after that I noticed some rattling I called the garage me and dad have being going to for years as the guy is a family friend and he said since he just fitted a new exhaust for it, the rattling noise I hear will just be the exhaust finding a place to settle and the burning was just the coating or something on the exhaust because it was new can't remember his exact words, this was when it only happened every now and then so I left it, now though iv noticed that its getting gradually worse, the rattling is louder now when I accelerate or change gear, and when on long journeys there is a burning smell too. I don't have time to take it to a garage as I work 7 while 6 everyday but sunday so can't get it in till next week need some kind of idea how much or what this is please. Bear in mind i'm only 20 so if its something complicated can you explain what it might be. Thanks in advance Xxx btw the rattling is under the passenger side. I couldn't work out where is was coming from in the beginning or I would've known it wasn't the exhaust lol.Help! Car makes rattling noise when I change gear or accelerate and burns after long journeys!?
It's likely that a ';Baffle';, within the silencer part of the exhaust has broken loose and is rattling within the box. Eventually the rattle will subside due to the baffle getting stuck in the 'soot' within the box. Secondly, the smell IS as a result of a new exhaust part being fitted and burning off any labels and grease from manufacturing. This may also be the reason the Silencer is now rattling, as the repair to the exhaust has caused the baffle to break loose, due to the tugging and pulling during the part refit.

Leave it for a week or two and the baffle will find it's ';new home'; within the silencer, and wedge there and cease rattling.Help! Car makes rattling noise when I change gear or accelerate and burns after long journeys!?
Without hearing it, it's difficult to diagnose but it's certainly possible it's the new exhaust. New exhausts do have grease, paint, labels etc. on them which will burn off as they get hot. It is possible that the silencer has a faulty baffle in it, but it's much more likely that the way it hangs just needs a little adjusting to stop it hitting the floor or something. A very simple job which doubtless he'll do for nowt since he fitted it in the first place.

How do i top up the hydraulic clutch fluid on my peugeot 406 2 litre petrol executive 5 door estate?

any ideas ? i have to press the clutch pedal hard to the floor before i can change gear - the manual says not to tamper with the clutch fluid reservoir - can i just top it up? if so - with what? How do i top up the hydraulic clutch fluid on my peugeot 406 2 litre petrol executive 5 door estate?
Just remove the lid and fill it to the full level, if its low you may have a leaking clutch master or slave unit, If the vehicle is new go the dealership for a warranty repair if they wont help you call a Lemon Law expert and ask for some help, its free in most cases. God blessHow do i top up the hydraulic clutch fluid on my peugeot 406 2 litre petrol executive 5 door estate?
if i remember correctly it is a sealed system. i would think it is more likely to be the pressure plate.

How much will it cost to replace an auto transmission?

I think my gear box in my 1990 Mazda 323 needs to be replaced. It seems to reve hardout before it changes gears i cant really explain it properly but my boyfriend says the clutch is slipping, and it doesnt seem to grab properly. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get it replaced? i know you can get second hand gear boxes as its an old carHow much will it cost to replace an auto transmission?
You just need a new clutch set up and resurface the flywheel. About $300-400?

    Chain crunches when changing gears?

i borrowed a bike from my friend and i think i messed it up! it has 3 gears at the front and seven at the back (counting these from the shifters). when i shift onto 2 at the front and i'm pedalling it starts to make a loud crunching noise and gets stuck going round so i have to push down harder. After a while the chain seems to become really loose and i can't pedal until i turn the pedals backwards and the chain fixes its self- but it still crunches going round and is noisy. How do i fix this before i give the bike back please!!!!! ThanksChain crunches when changing gears?
A noisy chain is probably shifting too slowly up or down. You can try changing the cable tension by adjusting the barrel adjusters connected to the cable on the downtube or on the derailleurs (any adjuster that can be hand tightened/loosened). If the chain gets stuck and falls off, it's probably a result of improper chain tension on the front derailleur. If adjusting the barrel adjusters doesn't work, you can always bring it to a bike shop for them to look at it. They can give you a price quote for the repair. For adjusting/tuning the derailleur limit screws, it probably will be less than $20.Chain crunches when changing gears?
k you didnt break it, its just wear and tear ont he chain and the acutal gear cogs, if oil doesnt fix it, tell himt o get it replaced.

I'm not sure you'll ever get an answer to this one, mostly because I don't think anyone can understand it.

It looks like you are mixing tire height/tread diameter with wheel/rim diameter and rim width.

Or are you trying to put tractor tires on this thing?

How to change gear in wheeling?

when your up in a wheelie and you wanna shift. just let off the gas and pull up on the shifter. JUST MAKE SURE YOU'RE IN A HIGH RPM!! in other words when your at the top of that first gear and its about to drop let off the gas and pull up one gear. no you dont have to use the clutch but be sure you dont shift up in a low RPM or youll tear up your tranny

What is atachometer? how to use it while changing gears?

    Did you mean ';tachometer';?

A tachometer (also called a revolution-counter, rev-counter, or RPM gauge) is an instrument that measures the rotation speed of a shaft or disk, as in a motor or other machine. The device usually displays the revolutions per minute (RPM) on a calibrated analog dial, but digital displays are increasingly common.

Tachometers on automobiles, aircraft, and other vehicles show the rate of rotation of the engine's crankshaft, and typically have markings indicating a safe range of rotation speeds. This can assist the driver in selecting appropriate throttle and gear settings for the driving conditions. Prolonged use at high speeds may cause excessive wear and other damage to engines. This is more applicable to manual transmissions than to automatics. On analog tachometers speeds above maximum safe operating speed are typically indicated by an area of the gauge marked in red, giving rise to the expression of ';redlining'; an engineæ””evving the engine up to the maximum safe limit. The red zone is superfluous on most modern cars, since their engines typically have a rev limiter which electronically limits engine speed to prevent damage. Diesel engines with traditional mechanical injector systems have an integral governor which prevents over-speeding the engine, so the tachometers in vehicles and machinery fitted with such engines sometimes lack a redline.

In vehicles such as tractors and trucks, the tachometer often has other markings, usually a green arc showing the speed range in which the engine produces maximum torque, which is of prime interest to operators of such vehicles. Tractors fitted with a power take off (PTO) system have tachometers showing the engine speed needed to rotate the PTO at the standardised speed required by most PTO-driven implements. In many countries, tractors are required to have a speedometer for use on a road. To save fitting a second dial, the vehicle's tachometer is often marked with a second scale in units of speed. This scale is only accurate in a certain gear, but since many tractors only have one gear that is practical for use on-road, this is sufficient. Tractors with multiple 'road gears' often have tachometers with more than one speed scale. Aircraft tachometers have a green arc showing the engine's designed cruising speed range.

In older vehicles, the tachometer is driven by the RMS Voltage waves from the low tension (LT) side of the ignition coil, while on others (and nearly all diesel engines, which have no ignition system) engine speed is determined by the frequency from the alternator tachometer output. This is a special circuit inside the alternator to convert from rectified sine wave to square wave, and the electrical potential difference is directly proportional to engine speed. Tachometers driven by a rotating cable from a drive unit fitted to the engine (usually on the camshaft) also exist- usually on simple diesel-engined machinery with basic or no electrical systems. On recent engine management systems found on modern vehicles, the signal for tachometer is usually generated from an engine ECU which derives the information from either the crankshaft or camshaft speed sensor. What is atachometer? how to use it while changing gears?
Uh, what he said. As far as how to use it while changing gears? Not too sure, I learned how to drive a stick from a truck driver, and he taught me to listen to the sound of the engine. Since then, the tach is just another gauge that I can do with out. What is atachometer? how to use it while changing gears?
In simpler terms, the tachometer is a gage that looks just like the speedometer, but shows how fast the engine is turning.

Engines work best withing a certain speed range, and watching the tach helps you know that the engine is turning either too slow (downshift) or too fast (upshift).

After a while, you will get used to the sound and feel of the engine, and will probably go by that to shift.

How do i know my drive shaft is broken on my mercedes clk?

its a automatic and it's stuck in first gear and wont change gear, so iv been tolled its its the drive shafts and it cant sence when to change gear. if it is the drive shafts both of them how much will it cost to repaire. How do i know my drive shaft is broken on my mercedes clk?
your driveshaft is not broken. tranny stuck in first gear means it is in limp (safe) mode and usually is electronic issue. did you happen to spill anything on the shifter lately? that would definitely put the tranny in limp mode. most of the time when tranny goes in limp mode is because of the speed sensors which are located in an electronics part called the conductor plate, and the error code is in the p0700 area, usually p0715. you can get away for awhile with just erasing the code, but eventually the error code will show up and tranny will be back in limp mode. part costs around $200 and easy to change. you will need mercedes diagnostics sds machine to erase tranny codes and set adaptation values. my advice is find a good mercedes mechanic, it could be something simple. How do i know my drive shaft is broken on my mercedes clk?
sounds like the tranny is shot. not the drive shaft.
Yep, sounds like it is your transmission, not your drive shaft.
these guys are right, your car wouldnt move if your drive shaft were broken,.your trans is shot
It's probably a bad shifter, or a faulty transmission control module. If the transmission was bad the car wouldn't move at all.

Since it's a rear-wheel drive car you only have one drive shaft, and a shaft issue won't cause your problem. Plan on spending at least $1,000 to fix it.
If the drive shaft was broken, the car would not move at all. Since you mention that it just won't change gears, that tells you power is getting to the rear wheels which rules out the drive shaft and side shafts.

If it's stuck in first gear, it's likely either a bad transmission valve body electronic plate or the gear shifter assembly is faulty. You'll have to have the vehicle checked by a shop or technician familiar with your CLK to diagnose the problem properly.

How to change the Gearing on my jeep to allow bigger tires?

How do I change the gears to allow 33 inch tires on my stock jeep grand cherokee... i am going to lift it soon and i need to know how to change the gearing so it will turn the bigger tires...please helpHow to change the Gearing on my jeep to allow bigger tires?
Switch your differentials to a deeper gear ratio. For 33's, depending on the size of your engine and what kind of wheeling you do you'll want a 4.10 at the least. Probably a 4.88 but talk to someone who has the sameconfiguration and get their opinion. i went w/ 33's a 4 cyl and 4.10 difs and wish I would've gone w/ the 4.88's. I have 5th gear but not in a stiff headwind. Lower is better but I wouldn't mind a little more torque. BTW, do not attempt to do the difs on your own.How to change the Gearing on my jeep to allow bigger tires?
get a professional to do it...save yourself the time and headache and get it done correctly.
Change the gears in your differentials, or the entire differential/axle units. There are a few different brands used on the Jeeps, so you need to identify the current setup first. Try looking on www.wjjeeps.com for some help with this, or Google. There has to be a large number of aftermarket options available.
Changing the ring %26amp; pinion is something that should only be done by a professional. If you mess it up, you can not only wind up destroying the ring %26amp; pinion (this needing new ones), but also damaging other internal parts and even the axles.
the work is best done by a profesional mechanic. however first you must find out what gear ratio is in your jeep and the tire size now as well as what you are putting on and then calculate the amount of change needed,to maintain stock final ratio or increase final ratio if that is what you want
You don't have to change the gears at all. Unless you want to gear down to allow for more power. You can do the lift without doing anything to your gears. Your spedometer is going to be wrong, but you can get a spedo gear that is adjusted for your tire size..etc..for about $30 and it replaces the stock one. This will adjust your spedometer to be correct.
Just lift it, toss on some new hoops, and get the speedometer recalibrated for the new size. You may have to get a longer drive shaft, which may come with the lift kit, but there is no reason to change any gears, unless you are looking for speed or looking to pass everything but a gas station.

How hard is it to change the gears in the rear end of a mustang?

    What year?

If it's an 8'; or 9'; all you have to do is pop the pumpkin out and drop a new one in. The pumpkin should be properly rebuilt as noted below.

The 7.5 or 8.8 is a little more difficult since the carrier is not removable.

However, the actual gear replacement should be left to a shop that knows how to set up the rear end for proper gear mesh and preload. He'll have the right tools as well.

So, the short answer - it's easy: drive to shop, pay, pick it up from shop. How hard is it to change the gears in the rear end of a mustang?
Actually changing them isn't all that hard, but getting them meshed and spaced correctly take know how and expertise. I leave rear end rebuilds to the experts. I've seen too many DIY rear end rebuilds that were noisy and didn't last. Setting a rear end up for quiet operation and long life is an art.How hard is it to change the gears in the rear end of a mustang?
It's a job definitely left to someone with experience.

I don't recommend this project for a DIY - the gears are expensive and it's critical that they be installed correctly.

2001 Volkswagen Jetta Owners please help me?

It sound like a pretty serious problem and you should definitely go to either a VW Dealership or some car shop and have them check it out. Usually they can do it for free.

How do you change gear smoothly?

I'm learning how to drive but find it really difficult to change gear smoothly. My instructor explains it as a swapping of the feet. So I take my foot off the gas and go down on the clutch, change gear and then take the clutch to the biting point quickly and then go back down on the gas and slowly bring up the rest of the clutch from the biting point. But each time i do this there is a small bump feeling and it annoys me. If i try to do it as a slow swapping of the feet as my instructor explains it seems to take too long and I lose the momentum. Please help me. Sorry if this is confusing. How do you change gear smoothly?
Think of the gas and clutch as a teter-toter so when the clutch goes down the gas comes up to stop and the other way to go.

Accidentally changed gears while engine isnt on?

im a new driver, and sometimes i like to just keep the car 'on' but not the engine on.. just idling the car while chillin listening to music. what sucks is a few times while not thinking ive changed my gears while the engine wasnt on and my car would roll or whatever.

how bad is this for my cars transmission/gears? i hope its not bad ive made this mistake a few times... prolly 3 times.

thanks muchAccidentally changed gears while engine isnt on?
won't hurt it as long as you don't put it in park while it's still moving.Accidentally changed gears while engine isnt on?
    wont really hurt it
its OK, dont worry about it. Your engine not running wont hurt the transmission.
It's not too big of a deal, since its an automatic though, you may have just scraped the shifter. If you try and avoid it in the future you shouldn't have any problems.
have no fear the gear will never fail. you should have no trouble as it's just shifting gears like it should.
Well you neglected to say what kind of transmission you have. Either way you can't possibly hurt anything. You may have shfited from park to nuetral and then it rolled. By the way - never leave a parked car in park on an incline without the parking brake on. You could damage the tranny if you do that. And it won't roll...
wow i hope yo have a extra trany cus it will be toast soon

How do you remove the Engine RPM limiter on a 95 Chevy Cavalier?

I am not looking to remove the vehicle speed limiter, I want to remove the Engine RPM limiter. These are 2 different items. This car is used for circle track racing in an entry level class.

It hits the REV limiter at the end of the straight stretch. Changing gears at the end of the straight strech is not an option. Changing gear ratio is not an option.

approx. $3,000Trying to budget...any idea how much a new transmission on a 2000 Ford Explorer will run?
i'd say around $1000 for the new trans. and labor. that's pretty sad for a model year 2000...how many miles??
It depends on what type drive. 2 or 4 wheel.Oem unit plus labor looks like it will use up most of $3000.00. Rebuit about $ 1000less..
I would say about $1000 - $1500 that would included parts and labor. Actually not a huge job. Alot of the price is in the new transmission. You should also look into to getting a rebuilt transmission, they offer a good warranty with rebuids and a little cheaper.

Before doing this try to use an additive that could cure this problem. Transmission medic. Just add the bottle and it eliminates alot of the slipping.
Just wondering if you ever had the fluid changed.

Only use an ATRA certified local repair shop. DO NOT go to a transmission store like AAMCO or MrTransmission.

Manual Transmission Automobile Questions- Changing Gears?

I learned on an Automatic Toyota Camry 1988 4 speed, and I'd like to get a manual as my next car to experience the additional control. Anyway, I was reading up on changing gears which is the fundamental difference between auto and manual transmission, and while I fully understand the ';process'; of changing gears, I still dont quite get the ';purpose'; behind it. I have two things I need to be cleared up.

1- I understand that you need to start accelerating in first gear, and shift up when appropriate as your rev's increase. From a functional perspective, why wouldnt I be able to start accelerating (from stationary position) in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear?

2- What exactly is it that allows a higher gear to accelerate faster using less revs, from a technical perspective? I've looked into the functionality of an internal combustion engine previously, but I've never touched on the functionality of the gearbox so I'm not too sure how it works in relation to the overall functioning of the vehicle.

Any replies would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.Manual Transmission Automobile Questions- Changing Gears?
It's actually pretty simple to explain: the gears are different sizes. That's it. The ';size'; or ';ratio'; of 1st gear is designed to get the car moving without wearing the clutch out or making the engine work too hard. Each following gear gets a higher ratio so the engine moves slower at higher road speeds, making the car's work easier. The lower your revs, the more efficient your vehicle becomes. When you need the power, you put the car into a lower gear to get your revs in a more optimal power range.

Like the first person mentioned, try riding a multi-speed bicycle. If you try taking off in the highest gear, it's quite difficult. Likewise, if you try going fast in the lowest gear, you have to pedal very hard and it's tiring. So you are the ';engine'; essentially.

In a nut shell, the car's different-sized gears are basically there to make the engine's job easier. There really aren't any set ';rules'; for optimal rev ranges while driving though. I generally shift at around 2500 RPM in regular driving, which is pretty economical. When I'm done accelerating, I upshift until I bring my car's engine speed under 2000 RPM so I get good gas mileage. All vehicles and driving styles are different though. You'd probably want to shift sooner in a large vehicle or something that runs on diesel, since they have a lower redline. In a car with a small engine (like smaller than a 2-liter), they typically are more willing to rev since they have higher redlines, which allows you to shift later while still maintaining good efficiency.

Anyway, I hope I was helpful.Manual Transmission Automobile Questions- Changing Gears?
    1. Try riding a bike with set of gears (one on back tire and one pedal side). Try setting it in both smallest gear and see how you move from rest. I bet you that by the time you reach one block you'll be exhausted. It's easy to pedal that way but how much energy do you need to get you going. But try to set the both on the biggest gear and see how you accelerate. It's kinda hard but you cover more ground with less pedal. Get the idea?

    2. High gear means more revolution in turn makes you move faster.

It's pretty much for the engine not to damage it. That's why you have to start on low gear, give your car enough speed from rest then move the gear accordingly.
    1. technically you can do this, its very bad for your trsnny and wont last long.

    2.gear ratios inside the transmission
If you're about to make the jump from an automatic to a manual, shouldn't you be more concerned with how to drive the manual and not what is happening while you are driving it? Almost sounds like you are questioning the design of the manual as a whole..
ok so let me explain you a simple logic and u will get both the answers..

    for gears we say

    N1xD1=N2xD2.

N-speed of gears in revolutions per sec(rpm)

    D-Diameter of gears.

so that means the more is the diameter(size) of your gear less will be its speed..

and thus while you put 1st gear it consumes more revolution and reaches or restricts to less speed with high rpm.

  • How can I stop my cat from hissing and growling?

We've recently adopted a new cat, who must only be about eight weeks old. The first night we got here she was active and friendly however since then she just hides. When we manage to find her we can't get close without her hissing. She also growls, it's like the steady hum of a car changing gears in a car. We're worried she won't get out of this habit and it's been a few days since she's been here... when will she be sociable and how can we help? How can I stop my cat from hissing and growling?
My family had a cat for awhile and when we first got her for the first 4 weeks she would hide from us, and then when you got close to her she would try and scratch you. Cat's do that because they are scared and are in a new area and are not used to their surroundings yet, just wait a couple more weeks and everything should be fine! How can I stop my cat from hissing and growling?
Get a dog!!! cats are teriblle animals
it is just afarid of the new area, and wants to hide, give it a few weeks then it will come, out. and kitten are better than dogs. except for husky.
It's all about patience and creating a good environment. Some cats need to build up trust in different ways than others. I have one cat that warmed up to me instantly while another one will dart away when I come into a room.
