How to tell when to shift gear for maximum acceleration?

Hi Guys,

What are the 'telling' signs of when to change gear for maximum acceleration i.e. engine noise, feel etc?

Im not very good at it and kind of do it naturally and find myself at about 5500rpm when shifting for performance.

Any tips how to recognise when to shift for maximum acceleration would be much appreciated.

well obviously for maximum acceleration you would need to be a maximum rpms before accelerating then each time you shift gears be at the maximum rpms tooHow to tell when to shift gear for maximum acceleration?
I've always been told it's best to shift smaller engines with less torque at high rpms, so that on the next gear, you start out higher on the powerband.

Bigger torquier engines, though, I think vary a little more. Some may do better shifting a bit short of red line in the first couple gears, so as to rely on torque to get you moving..
for max acceleration wait and keep your accelarator pressed until you feel there is no more power the car producing and the change
Look up the engine specifications for your engine. You should be able to find this in several places on the Internet.

There will be a specification for horse power. Along with this specification there will be the RPM where the engine makes maximum horse power. After the engine makes maximum horse power, the horse power quickly falls off.

Shift at an RPM just past the maximum horse power RPM. This will usually be somewhat below red line on the tachometer.
as MJ alludes to, you want to look at your specs and find out where the HP and torque peaks are in RPM for your car. for maximum acceleration, you should never be more than 200 rpm above or below those numbers (below torque, above hp) you can run to redline, but most cars start to run out of 'gas' that high and if you set off your limiter you'll be up the creek.

for example, my car.

max torque is at 4200 rpm

max hp is at 6000 rpm.

if i am trying to get max speed i want to run up to about 6-6200 rpm before shifting... but my motor will cut out at 6700 rpm so i'm losing something if i go that high.
