How can I stop my cat from hissing and growling?

We've recently adopted a new cat, who must only be about eight weeks old. The first night we got here she was active and friendly however since then she just hides. When we manage to find her we can't get close without her hissing. She also growls, it's like the steady hum of a car changing gears in a car. We're worried she won't get out of this habit and it's been a few days since she's been here... when will she be sociable and how can we help? How can I stop my cat from hissing and growling?
My family had a cat for awhile and when we first got her for the first 4 weeks she would hide from us, and then when you got close to her she would try and scratch you. Cat's do that because they are scared and are in a new area and are not used to their surroundings yet, just wait a couple more weeks and everything should be fine! How can I stop my cat from hissing and growling?
Get a dog!!! cats are teriblle animals
it is just afarid of the new area, and wants to hide, give it a few weeks then it will come, out. and kitten are better than dogs. except for husky.
It's all about patience and creating a good environment. Some cats need to build up trust in different ways than others. I have one cat that warmed up to me instantly while another one will dart away when I come into a room.
