How hard is it to change the gears in the rear end of a mustang?

What year?

If it's an 8'; or 9'; all you have to do is pop the pumpkin out and drop a new one in. The pumpkin should be properly rebuilt as noted below.

The 7.5 or 8.8 is a little more difficult since the carrier is not removable.

However, the actual gear replacement should be left to a shop that knows how to set up the rear end for proper gear mesh and preload. He'll have the right tools as well.

So, the short answer - it's easy: drive to shop, pay, pick it up from shop. How hard is it to change the gears in the rear end of a mustang?
Actually changing them isn't all that hard, but getting them meshed and spaced correctly take know how and expertise. I leave rear end rebuilds to the experts. I've seen too many DIY rear end rebuilds that were noisy and didn't last. Setting a rear end up for quiet operation and long life is an art.How hard is it to change the gears in the rear end of a mustang?
It's a job definitely left to someone with experience.

I don't recommend this project for a DIY - the gears are expensive and it's critical that they be installed correctly.
