your driveshaft is not broken. tranny stuck in first gear means it is in limp (safe) mode and usually is electronic issue. did you happen to spill anything on the shifter lately? that would definitely put the tranny in limp mode. most of the time when tranny goes in limp mode is because of the speed sensors which are located in an electronics part called the conductor plate, and the error code is in the p0700 area, usually p0715. you can get away for awhile with just erasing the code, but eventually the error code will show up and tranny will be back in limp mode. part costs around $200 and easy to change. you will need mercedes diagnostics sds machine to erase tranny codes and set adaptation values. my advice is find a good mercedes mechanic, it could be something simple. How do i know my drive shaft is broken on my mercedes clk?
sounds like the tranny is shot. not the drive shaft.
Yep, sounds like it is your transmission, not your drive shaft.
these guys are right, your car wouldnt move if your drive shaft were broken,.your trans is shot
It's probably a bad shifter, or a faulty transmission control module. If the transmission was bad the car wouldn't move at all.

Since it's a rear-wheel drive car you only have one drive shaft, and a shaft issue won't cause your problem. Plan on spending at least $1,000 to fix it.
If the drive shaft was broken, the car would not move at all. Since you mention that it just won't change gears, that tells you power is getting to the rear wheels which rules out the drive shaft and side shafts.

If it's stuck in first gear, it's likely either a bad transmission valve body electronic plate or the gear shifter assembly is faulty. You'll have to have the vehicle checked by a shop or technician familiar with your CLK to diagnose the problem properly.
