When to shift gear for manual?

As my car doesn't have a Rev meter, how do I know when to change gear apart from 'feeling' or 'listening' to the engine sound? I heard that monitoring the speed will be a good guide but which range is for which gear? My speedometer is in Km/hr.When to shift gear for manual?
if you have the owners manual with the car ,it will tell you at which speeds to shift the gears at,and when to shift back to a different gear when going up or down a hill,if you read the owners manual ts one of the best books you can ever read on your car, good luck,i hope this help,s.When to shift gear for manual?
thanks.

That depends on the car. You want to shift before the RPMs get too high, and you also don't want to shift when the RPMs are too low. You don't want to lug the engine down by shifting too soon. As for the speeds to shift, ask the dealer what speeds they recommend, since it would vary by car.
you can guage it by the whine of your engine. The higher it seems to go the more likely you need to shift.
it depends on the engine .... just shift at the lowest speed u can without lugging it ..
Every car has different speeds it needs to shift at, depending on the type of car and how many cyclinders your engine has. Your best bet is to listen. When your car sounds like it is reving to high switch gears up, if it jerks hard on the shift you should have shifted sooner. If it seems like it is dragging after the shift you should have waited and shifted later. Watch your speedometer while you practice this then you will know the speeds when you should shift and get the feel for it. It will be natural after awhile. But also remember if you are going up a hill you will be shifting at a higher speed than normal.
Hi,

I had a car with no Rpm guage and you can use the sound of the engine with the speedometer. For the car I had it was basically a small FOUR cylinder and it worked out to be:

0-15 mph lst gear (some higher 20/25!)

16-25 mph 2nd gear

26-35 third gear

36-49 fourth gear

over 50 cruising....fifth gear....

this is adjustable when you want a quicker take off, or if you're going up a steep hill.

DON't shift at the earliest (bad advice from someone), you're forcing the engine to work too hard to bring up the rpms to the optimal place (and therefore losing the mpg advantage of sticks), plus you might need to downshift again in traffic, instead of just coasting (and saving your clutch AND brakes). When the engine is no longer giving you the pickup that you had early in the torque curve, then it's time to shift. This is well before the engine screaming because you are pushing it too hard. I've found that you can push it pretty hard and the engine will tell you with noise and a lack of acceleration (the gear ratio has maxed it's speed) and most people are not going to fry it by pushing harder. However, I've been in the car with people who shifted from 1st to 2nd at 35mph in a 4 cylinder (not racer!), I could hear the whine but I didn't want to backseat drive, haha.

You cars maker might have more information. Mechanics are also a good source, as they see burnt clutches all the time.
Well... before the engine flys apart. its better to run lowere rpms than higher.
