How do you change gears on a motorbike?

Ive only ever had automatic scooters, and now im looking to purchase a manual. But, ive already done my CBT on an auto so i dont know how to change gear. Can any1 give me the basics.

Thanks. How do you change gears on a motorbike?
The clutch works just like a car, the gears are under your left foot. One click down is usually first gear, then depending on the bike there are five more clicks up. 1 down 5 up, 5 down and half a click up is nutral, be safe! How do you change gears on a motorbike?
Clutch in select gear power up slightly release clutch slowly.
Your left foot works a peg - Down for 1st then back up for 2nd - 5th or 6th, your left hand works the clutch.

Cant get too technical as I only just passed my CBT too!!!!
some bikes differ but most bikes are

1st gear down with clutch in let out

slowly then 2/3/4 are up on left hand pedal

good luck

Wow this is not so easy to describe as to most riders it comes as an automatic response.

I have been riding for many years and if you were a child of mine I would send you to a local rider school for a few hours of basic training

Your safety is first and foremost here and these guys and gals teach and most teach very well. If you were happy with your CBT training then ask them if they would be willing to teach you the fundamants of gear changing. I feel sure that it is not likely to cost the earth and like I said your safety comes in first and some of the information you get on here might not be correct despite all the good intentions

Keep safe and ride well, get that training you will get a great deal more than just changing gear from them in a very short space of time

Good luck and post again when you have done it. I continue to read the motorcycle section and would like to hear how you got on
Most of the motorcycles on the road today, have five speed transmissions. They are almost always one down, and four up. What this means if that, from nuetral, you push down on the shifter pedal to put the bike in first gear. Then as you go down the road, pull in on the clutch lever and pull the shift pedal up with your toes, to go into the subsequent gears. It takes alittle practice to be able to shift smoothly, but with the more time spent at it, it will come easier.
clutch is the left hand, and you shift with your left foot. up for gear up, down for gear down.
