They're called grip shifts if you want to google it. The left shifter moves the chain on the front sprocket. This one is typically used to shift when you encounter a hill and need to suddenly downshift to make the climb.

The right shifter is for more subtle shifts and is primarily used to adjust your ride for maximum comfort. You can also use it to downshift at red lights so you have better acceleration on take-off. The typical gear setting for leisure rides is 2 on the left and 3 - 5 on the right.

Though most riders prefer the click shifts, I prefer the grip shifts b/c you use your whole hand to shift instead of your thumbs, which can break on rough trails. Since it's been a few years since you rode a bike, I suggest getting bar ends that will allow you to sit upright while you ride.

Enjoy your bike. Mountain bikes are much more comfortable to ride than your typical Sekine 10-speed racer. How do i change gears on an 18 speed index shifting swimano mt. sport SX?
You need to be pedaling (lightly) when you change gears. Before you come to a stop you want the shift to # 2 on the left and # 1 on the right. You will be able to start out again in that gear. You want to select a gear that will allow you to pedal at 70-90 rpm's with a lite pressure on the pedals. That will allow your body to burn fat as a fuel and will keep your legs from getting tired too fast.

You want to start out with short rides until your butt gets use to the saddle. Make sure your saddle is adjusted properly.
