How to change gears on a Dirt Bike?

How to change gears on my dirt bike?

Ive got a 110cc . ..I know you have to put your clutch in and press down or up....and i have never riden a bike before so im trying to learn??How to change gears on a Dirt Bike?
Motorcycle gears goes like this

1 - n - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ( sometimes 6).

So you start out in neutral. The first gear is ONE DOWN. Once the bikes gets moving, ONE UP should get you into second (and skip neutral automatically). Then ONE UP (again) gets you into third, forth, etc.

When you slow down, it is the opposite. Sometime when you come to a stop, you might go into first (or if you press down softly from second, you might go into neutral).

The neutral is really not in full step but in half step.

===

One of the key thing to remember is that the motorcycle can only shift if the gears are moving. Unlike a car you can't shift into 5th with the engine off. If you stalled the engine while you were in third (or forth or fifth), you probably will not be able to get the gear to shift into second and then first while standing still. There are time when you might be trying to shift and it wont (especially if you just came to a stop). In which case you have to let the clutch out just a little bit to get the gears spinning then pull back on the clutch and try shifting again.

So when you are slowing to stop, it is best to shift then clutch out, shift then clutch out, shift then clutch out, etc.

===

Sometimes it is difficult to know what gear you are in. So you can often see bikers come to a stop and then repeatedly pressing down on the shift lever over and over and over (just to be sure they are in one). Then very carefully shift half step back into Neutral.

===

Starting to get the bike moving in first is the most difficult. With the bike in first gear, you have to let the clutch out slowly while giving it gas. Then as the bike gets moving, you let the clutch out little bit more as you give it little bit more gas.

Whe shifting into any other gear, you don't have to be so careful, but just don't pop the clutch either.

If you can get somebody to show you have a car clutch works, get some lesson on a car with manual shift first. The clutches all work the same way.

===

Learn about shifting is something difficult to do by reading. If you have nobody to teach you, at least just take ONE class from a motorcycle riding school. Then you'll get an idea of what it all means.How to change gears on a Dirt Bike?
the first gear is always down. the rest are up. I have always had trouble with this, but with trial and error you can get it.
The difficult part may be finding neutral. After that pull the clutch, first gear is down release the clutch slowly give her gas and you are away. pull the clutch and lift the gear lever up for the higher gear. release and keep going

After a very short time shifting up and down will become instinctive
On a typical manual clutch motorcycle it is 1-n-2-3-4-5. On some older semi auto bikes like the old honda ct70,ct90, and honda 110 the gears are all down. My sons yamaha 200 the gears are all up.These new clone bikes that are coming over here now have rotary transmissions in them and the gearing is all up and doesnt stop at 5 gear, it goes rite back to first. I think you have an older bike or a new clone because I cant think of any 110cc bikes on the market rite now. What year/ make is your bike?
