How do you know what gear number to use and when to change gears?

i haven't driven a manual car yet but starting at the end of this month, and i have so far got everything but not the gears as im confused...i know to start the car your gear should be on nuetral and then you can shift to gear 1 or 2 once starting off..but how can you tell when to shift to whatever number gear

little bit of help please...How do you know what gear number to use and when to change gears?
I agree with Zander. When I first drove a standard transmission it never even died on me. Of course I watched my mother drive her standard for MANY years while I was in the passenger seat. I listened to the motor before/during/after she shifted to get a feel of when I should shift. Most cars you should shift at about 2,500-3000 RPM. This will help you save the engine life as well as help with fuel economy.

Some cars even have what they call a 'dummy' light. This is a light some where on the dash that lets you know when to shift. Don't be ashamed if you can't figure it out at first as some people have a natural 'knack' for it, and some don't. Good luck. How do you know what gear number to use and when to change gears?
It is a natural thing the ability to drive and if you can't get the 'feel' of when to change gear then I suggest that you get an automatic.
you start in 1st and move up the gear box as you accelerate. You should be able to feel when you need to change gear and if you are not confident then you should have a couple of lessons as you could be very very dangerous on the road if you don't know how to handle a manual car.
It's by listening to the engine and watching the revs, if you haven't driven a manual before get lessons and make sure you're entitled to drive a manual since in some countries if you've passed in an automatic you can only drive an automatic.
2.500rpm-3.500rpm for eco driving

3.500rpm-4.500rpm to enjoy your car
You use the tachometer, that other big gauge that moves as you rev the motor. You keep the motor between 2000 and 3500 rpm for normal driving.

btw, you always start on first gear. Not that you can't on second, just makes life harder.
You'll learn, anybody can.Just takes time and patience. If you will be driving an older model car you can tell by the speed you are going in a certain gear and also by the sound of the engine.Have not had newer model cars with straight gear trans. but they probably might have a light to tell you when to shift. You might want to check that out.Have someone with you to show and explain. It's like riding a bike, once you learn how,you never forget. The gear shift knob should have the pattern for shifting on it.If not you can buy one for it.
