The bit at the top by the handlebars, where you turn it to change gears, is broken on one side so I have to change them manually all the time. the other side is working fine. Assuming it's a recent model bike then a replacement changer will be about 拢10 to 拢15. A bike shop will charge about 拢25 hour labour, although the job would only take them 10 minutes. Smile sweetly when you take your bike into your local shop and they'll want to keep you as a future customer :-)



It's far more cost effective in the long run to learn how to fix a bike yourself and build up a set of tools - the knowledge and tools will last you a lifetime. I started with Richard Ballantine's Bicycle Book - out of print, but still valuable. Park do a good workshop guide too. It will depend on the quality of the shifter. You can look on Amazon and get a new set for replacement.
