MTB gears wont change even though the handle/selector moves?

hi

i was riding my bike then i got of and the i came back 10 mins later and i was just stuck in gear 6, even if i get of and move the chain to gear 3 i get on ride and it changes back to gear 6 again. i also noticed there is a lttle metal square connected to the end of the wire on the instide of the selector on my handles witch is always next to the number 6 and when i change gear on my handels it stays there so it could be that but i still dont know how to fix it.

any help would be brilliant,

thanks, jakeMTB gears wont change even though the handle/selector moves?
Follow the cable down from the lever to the derailleur (gear selector), now operate the gear lever, you should be able to see the cable and the derailleur moving, If it is not working then perhaps the cable has broken or come loose from the mounting bolt. If the cable is ok then the derailleur itself has seized up or broken. Try oiling the joints then move it by hand to work the oil into each joint. After this try the gears again to see if it now works. If none of this is helping you will have to take it to the local bike shop for them to fix.MTB gears wont change even though the handle/selector moves?
Ok. Listen carefully.

Th lttle block is de ger selecta changr, an it selects the ratio of the master cog on the ratchette selecta cghangr. Alta de tenshin on the inner sprokkette selecta switch shifta til the gear handle changer ratchet is at 6, den de wire is clamped by de selecta switch in the sprockkette setter. Hope dis helps! :)
