you need to read the manual and find out how the gear box is sequenced before you jump on.

Then it is much like a motorbike...give it enough clutch to bite each time you change up or down, and never leave it parked in gear cos youll just forget about it and have trouble starting it...unless that's just me!?I am getting a 200cc quad its gonna be my first quad i really need to know how u change gears on a quad?
I'd advise against just jumping on it %26amp; riding it without a bit of tuition, but usually all gears are up, reverse (if fitted) is down, usually combined with an interlock.

I would strongly advise you get an owner's handbook and have a read of it to familiarise yourself, but in general terms,

Basically, the gear lever (left hand foot pedal) is spring loaded. Most quads have a centrifugal clutch, so switch the ignition on, and check the neutral light's on. If not, stamp on the pedal a few times to find neutral (you may need to gently flick the pedal back up if neutral isn't at the bottom of the 'box. You can then start it up, and whilst holding the front brake on, lift the pedal up to select first. Release the brake, ease in a bit of throttle, and away you go. To change up, release the throttle %26amp; lift the pedal to engage second, and so on. Changing down is done by 'stamping' the pedal down once for each downchange required.

If reverse gear is fitted, there's usually an interlock either on te handlebars or left hand side of the engine that must be lifted, pulled or turned whilst stamping down on the pedal to engage reverse.
