How does and automatic car change gears, how does it know to change?

it changes through applied pressure, better than explaining i'll give you a suggestion, go to your local parts store go to repair manual section there are manuals for each system on a vehicle, theres also manuals on small engine repairs such as lawn mowers, if i remember correctly they are 19.99+tax a great place to learn while your'e there buy one for your vehicle, it will be money well spent, have a blessed day, wesHow does and automatic car change gears, how does it know to change?
Many newer vehicles are mostly computer controlled and have many factors that actuate a shift. Your older vehicles mainly work off vaccum. Low RPMs creates a higher vaccum than full throttle. So basicly, the transmision knows to stay in a lower gear at higher vaccum. Also some vehicles have a linkage from the pedal that tells the trans when you ';tromp down'; like to pass someone, it tells it to downshift. How does and automatic car change gears, how does it know to change?
Automatics use epicyclic gear sets consisting of 3 components:-

Sun wheel

Planetary gears

Annulus or ring gear

By locking any one of these components a different ratio is created and even reversed. This locking is done by hydraulic pressure applying force through brake bands and/or clutches. The pressure is made by a pump inside the transmission forcing trans fluid through a valve body where it is controlled and sent to the various locking components in order to shift gear.

Gear shifts are made according to engine speed and load which is determined by various sensors which can be mechanical, vacuum or electronically modulated or a combination of all 3.
