How do you know when to change gears on a manual car?

i know to put it on 1st gear but how do u know when to change it to 2nd 3rd 4th and 5thHow do you know when to change gears on a manual car?
if you have an rpm gauge you look at that and just make sure that it doesnt go into the red zone for best gas mileage you want to change gears when it is about halfway up say 3500 to 4500 rpm........if there is no rpm guage you go by engine sound when it sounds like your reving it too hard you probably are..... you have to get used to it and feel it out and usually you can figure out how fast you can go in each speed and go by that...How do you know when to change gears on a manual car?
Most cars equipped with a manual (';standard';) transmission will have an indicator light to tell the driver when to ';upshift.'; While this is useful, in my particular case, I often ignored it, basing the need to shift on my experience, which I preferred over anything based on some computer algorithm.



Bottom line: let your experience be your guide. If someone is available to teach you - I learned from my father - learn from him or her.
