Every time i push down on the pedals, the gears seem to change, especially when I push down harder. It makes riding up hills and riding in general very difficult. Does anyone know what's wrong with it and how to fix it?My bike acts like its changing gears every time i step down on the pedals. How do i fix it?
HI Roberto:
The easiest first step is to clean and lubricate your chain. This fixes a surprising number of issues. Use a lubricant that is developed for bike chains. Spray lubricants like WD-40 do not last long and actually attract dirt to the chain.
If that doesn't fix the problem, make sure that the derailleur cables are properly lubricated. If they are encountering friction in the cable housing or on any of the frame guides, it will misalign your rear derailleur.
If the problem persists, adjust the rear derailleur barrel adjuster. An example of how to do this is here:

I would do that before you start playing with the high and low limit screws. Usually that barrel adjuster, which takes up or lets out cable tension, will solve the problem with the chain trying to sit between two gears. My bike acts like its changing gears every time i step down on the pedals. Your derailleurs are out of adjustment. We've answered this same question dozens of times, so do a search on the topic for advice on how to adjust them, or just go to www.sheldonbrown.com for advice.
Could be that your rear changer is not lined up properly with the sprockets on the cluster. (If you don't know how to adjust it properly, ask your bike shop.) However, I think it's more likely that your chain has stretched and is slipping on the cluster. The answer is a new chain; but note that if the new chain slips too, it means you need a new cluster as well.
Your chain is skipping.
Have your derailleurs adjusted. Try turning the barrel adjusters first though.
If you have grip shifters or the thumbshifter that are not 'trigger' type you might just be in between gears. Shift up or down WHILE pedalling until the chain engages.
Go to youtube and watch instructional videos on derailleur adjustments.
Good luck and happy riding!
You need to adjust the cable tension. There is a barrel adjuster where the shift cable goes into the rear derailleur. It will have little nubs on it so you can turn it in and out. If the bike wants to shift to a higher gear turn the adjuster out 1/2 turn and try it. Turning the adjuster out will move the derailleur toward the wheel and turning it in will move it away.

in youtube or google search for the same. If nothing helps, bike store and spending $10-20 is the last option....! I do a lot...!!
Good luck.
Try to get your pedals, crank arms, bottom bracket, and cassette to move by hand push and pull very hard in the same direction on the pedals/crank arms to see if you have any play. There should be zero movement/play/lossness if so fix/tighten or replace the part. Check your cassette or freewheel for play also, again there should not be any. Also check your chainrings and make sure there is zero play there also, you may need to tighten or replace bolts there also.
By your discription it makes me wonder also if you have taken care of your bike by using the proper chain lube at the correct intervals. Maybe your chain is worn and skipping gears. If this is true you may need to replace the cassette and chainrings also.
Could be a couple of things. If your bike is new(less than 1 year old), the derailleur indexing is probably out of adjustment. If the bike is older, with quite a bit of mileage, it could be chain stretch and/or cassette cog wear. Adjusting the derailleur will require that you take up slack in the cable using the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur. If it is wear, you will need a new chain and possibly a new cassette
