How do I change the gears to allow 33 inch tires on my stock jeep grand cherokee... i am going to lift it soon and i need to know how to change the gearing so it will turn the bigger tires...please helpHow to change the Gearing on my jeep to allow bigger tires?
Switch your differentials to a deeper gear ratio. For 33's, depending on the size of your engine and what kind of wheeling you do you'll want a 4.10 at the least. Probably a 4.88 but talk to someone who has the sameconfiguration and get their opinion. i went w/ 33's a 4 cyl and 4.10 difs and wish I would've gone w/ the 4.88's. I have 5th gear but not in a stiff headwind. Lower is better but I wouldn't mind a little more torque. BTW, do not attempt to do the difs on your own.How to change the Gearing on my jeep to allow bigger tires?
get a professional to do it...save yourself the time and headache and get it done correctly.
Change the gears in your differentials, or the entire differential/axle units. There are a few different brands used on the Jeeps, so you need to identify the current setup first. Try looking on www.wjjeeps.com for some help with this, or Google. There has to be a large number of aftermarket options available.
Changing the ring %26amp; pinion is something that should only be done by a professional. If you mess it up, you can not only wind up destroying the ring %26amp; pinion (this needing new ones), but also damaging other internal parts and even the axles.
the work is best done by a profesional mechanic. however first you must find out what gear ratio is in your jeep and the tire size now as well as what you are putting on and then calculate the amount of change needed,to maintain stock final ratio or increase final ratio if that is what you want
You don't have to change the gears at all. Unless you want to gear down to allow for more power. You can do the lift without doing anything to your gears. Your spedometer is going to be wrong, but you can get a spedo gear that is adjusted for your tire size..etc..for about $30 and it replaces the stock one. This will adjust your spedometer to be correct.
Just lift it, toss on some new hoops, and get the speedometer recalibrated for the new size. You may have to get a longer drive shaft, which may come with the lift kit, but there is no reason to change any gears, unless you are looking for speed or looking to pass everything but a gas station.
